All About Hot Yoga : Greenhouse Edition

Northern Life Yoga is working hard at bringing our community unique yoga experiences. One that we are particularly excited for is our collaboration with Red Barn Farm. Red Barn Farm is a beautiful environment with a variety of farm animals and scenery. Along with the farm animals they have a beautiful greenhouse, to which we had the amazing idea of leading a Greenhouse Hot Yoga class that will go through the summer months of July & August!

Hot Yoga has been around for years, it can often be difficult to bring to a smaller community because of the specific environment it requires. Hot Yoga rooms are specialized room that create heat and humidity typically ranging from 98 – 105 degrees and 40% humidity; sounded like greenhouse weather to us! They typically have fans to allow our bodies to cool down using our natural sweat and air flow, creating a savasana relaxation experience like you’ve never felt before.

So why would someone want to practice Hot Yoga? The heat of the space actually makes it safer to practice yoga. When our muscles are warmed, they stretch more easily. This prevents over stretching, pulled muscles, and straining. The heat and humidity also allow you to burn more calories, making Hot Yoga a wonderful alternative workout. According to researchers at Colorado State University, the calorie burn can be as high as 460 for men and 330 for women during a 90-minute Bikram Yoga session (variation of hot yoga). We only offer a 60-minute class, but you’re sure to feel the burn.

Additionally, A 2013 study of Bikram Yoga found that after 8 weeks of practicing, yoga participants had greater flexibility in their lower back, shoulders, and hamstrings than the control group.

Some physical benefits are hot yoga builds bone density, provides cardiovascular boost, and nourishes the skin. On the other hand, it also has mental health benefits by reducing stress and easing depression. Especially with our class being outside, in a greenhouse, the natural sun surrounding us offers a perfect combination to combat anxiety, stress, and depression. Especially, for us Northerners who often face seasonal depression; building up our vitamin D levels in the summer months while we can, is so important for our mental health!

Our Greenhouse Hot Yoga class will offer you a variety of benefits for you body, mind, and spirit. As you’re practicing, you’ll often get that surge of dopamine from your endorphins pumping, the natural vitamin D from the sun, the fresh air, and beautiful scenery bringing a sense of happiness within you. If this sounds like something you’d like to try -

Join us every Thursday from 5:45 – 6:45 pm at Red Barn Farm 2664 W 5 Mile Rd. SSM, Michigan.
